Jonathan HareidOctober 2009 -- JDP Student Jonathan Hareid Completes JD/PhD

Jonathan Hareid, JD, PhD in Pharmacology, successfully defended his dissertation "Quantification of Cell Surface Mu and Delta Opioid Receptor and Elucidation of Factors Governing Surface Receptor Pool" on October 1, 2009. He completed his JD in December 2008. Dr. Hareid received his BA in Physiology from the University of Minnesota and began the Joint Degree Program in 2001. He served on the staff of the Minnesota Journal of Law, Science & Technology (MJLST) in 2005-2006 and was an Articles Editor in 2006-2007. His article on "Testing Drugs and Testing Limits: Merck KGaA v. Integra Lifesciences I, Ltd. and the Scope of the Hatch-Waxman Safe Harbor Provision" was published in Volume 7 of MJLST. In 2007, Dr. Hareid worked as a Minnesota Justice Foundation volunteer for the ElderCare Rights Alliance, doing legal research on state-by-state regulation of assisted living facilities. In Summer 2008, he completed his thesis research on factors governing cell surface expression of opiod receptors, the class of receptors that mediate the effects of opiates such as morphine. This is important for understanding pain transmission and opiate addiction. Dr. Hareid plans to pursue a career in patent law or food and drug law. Congratulations!

The Joint Degree Program congratulates JDP students Brittney Crock, JD, MPH candidate in Public Health Administration & Policy, and Taylor Pierce, JD, MPH candidate in Public Health Administration and Policy, for being named Managing Editors of Volume 94 of the Minnesota Law Review. The Joint Degree Program also congratulates Minnesota Law Review staff members JDP student Chris Pinahs, JD, MS candidate in Plant Biological Sciences; JDP Fellow Laura Arneson,PhD (JD candidate); Eva Stensvad, MD (JD candidate); and Trevor Woodage, PhD, BMed (JD candidate).

Lauren BeachJuly 2009 -- Lauren Beach Named 2009 Point Scholar

JDP student Lauren Beach, JD, PhD candidate in Molecular, Cellular, Developmental Biology & Genetics was named a 2009 Point Scholar. Lauren is one of only 11 undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate recipients nationwide who were chosen for Point Scholarships from among nearly 2,500 applicants.

Point scholarships—which cover tuition, books, living expenses, and more—are set up with individual institutions to meet the needs of students of merit in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Recipient selection is a six-month process that involves an online application, submission of materials, a phone interview, and an in-person interview in San Francisco. Read More


July 2009 - JDP Students Receive Robina Public Policy Fellowships

Three Joint Degree Program students received 2009 Robina Public Policy Fellowships. These Fellowships are funded by the Robina Foundation which was established through the generosity of a Law School graduate. Fellows will work with non-profits on public policy projects.

Molly Gurian, who is pursuing a JD/MPH in Public Health Administration & Policy, is spending her summer working with the AARP in Washington, DC. New incoming Joint Degree students Mia Hunt and Catherine London are spending their summer at the Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault and the Children's Law Center of Minnesota, respectively.


Taylor PierceMay 2009 -- Taylor Pierce Publishes Article in Update

JDP student Taylor Pierce, JD, MPH candidate in Public Health Administration & Policy published an article entitled "Incentives for Innovation: A Call for Geriatric Exclusivity Legislation" in the May/June 2009 issue of Update, the magazine of the Food and Drug Law Institute, pp. 55-7.

Ms. Pierce also received an honorable mention for her submission to the 2009 ABA Section of Science & Technology Law's Student Writing Contest. Her paper will be published in an upcoming issue of the Section's electronic newsletter, SciTech e-Merging News. Read more...

JDP graduate Lindsey J. Hopper, JD, MPH in Community Health Education received The American Bar Association and the Bureau of National Affairs Award for Excellence in Health Law. This award honors a graduating student who has demonstrated superior academic performance and an interest in the field of health law.
