Shantanu Basu is an associate at the law firm of Morrison & Foerster. He joined the Palo Alto office of Morrison & Foerster in 2000. His practice includes U.S. and foreign patent prosecution, interferences, due diligence investigations and counseling with a focus on biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and bioinformatics.

Prior to joining Morrison & Foerster, Dr. Basu was an associate at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich and Rosati of Palo Alto, California where he prosecuted patents in the areas of biotechnology, the Internet, e-commerce, and medical devices.

He received his B.Sc. with Honors in Chemistry and M.Sc. in Biochemistry from Calcutta University in India. He received his M.S. with distinction in Molecular Biology and Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York where he researched bacteriophage T3 and T7 RNA polymerases and their promoters.

As a Junior Fellow of the American Cancer Society and later as a Fellow of the Leukemia Society of America, he carried out post-doctoral research in the laboratory of Dr. Harold E. Varmus at the University of California in San Francisco. He investigated chromosomal integration of retroviruses such as murine leukemia virus (MLV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). As a scientist he has co-authored several publications in the areas of protein chemistry, molecular biology, retrovirology, and gene therapy.

He received his J.D. from Fordham University School of Law in New York where he was a recipient of the Thomas F. Reddy, Jr. award in Intellectual Property. Dr. Basu also served on the editorial staff of the online editions of the National and New York Law Journals.

Dr. Basu is a member of the State Bars of California, New York, and New Jersey and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.He is a member of the American Bar Association, American Intellectual Property Law Association and the American Association for Advancement in Science.
