Thoughts about Joint Degree Program (JDP):
It is a tremendous honor to have been the first student in the Joint Degree Program. That status resulted in my nick-name, "guinea pig". My involvement in the Program, which is unique in the country, gave me a sense of pioneering the fascinating intersection of law, science, and policy.
Pursuing a science and law degree simultaneously not only allowed me to stay as "current" as possible in both fields, but also trained me to wear "multiple hats". In my field, patent law, the ability to wear multiple hats is extremely beneficial. On the one hand, I must think like a lawyer - interpreting law and applying a set of facts to the law. On the other hand, I must think like a scientist - I must understand the technology of the invention to best serve the client's interest.
The Program also raised my awareness of the important and difficult issues raised by technology that our nation faces. As a student in the Program I was afforded opportunities to hear lectures by some of the top authorities on issues such as genetic engineering and patenting genetic sequences.
My excitement about the JDP did not end with my graduation. I continue to crave some level of involvement with this outstanding Program. To that end, I am currently the elected President of the JDP Alumni Association and am in beginning phases of planning the role of this Association.
