Erin A. Egan, MD, JD, MJ, is a Senior Associate of the Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy and a resident in the Department of Internal Medicine at Loyola University of Chicago. Dr. Egan earned a BS in Biology at the University of Denver. She conducted clinical pharmaceutical research in allergy and asthma for one year. Thereafter; Dr. Egan went to medical school at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine and graduated in 1997. While in medical school she completed a Masters of Jurisprudence (MJ) in Health Law at Loyola University School of Law. Subsequently Dr. Egan returned to Loyola University School of Law and graduated from the JD program in 2002. Prior to joining the Internal Medicine Residency program at Loyola, Dr. Egan completed 2 years of residency in Family Practice. She completed a fellowship in Clinical Medical Ethics at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics, University of Chicago in 2001. Dr. Egan joined the Neiswanger Institute in June 2001.

Dr. Egan's research interests are in professional ethics, physician duties and professional regulation, and medical legal issues. Dr. Egan has worked in underserved rural and urban areas, including Indian reservations in North and South Dakota. She has also spent 2 years doing emergency room work via locum tenens. Dr. Egan currently focuses on clinical medical practice and direct patient care, while performing ethics consults fort he ethics consultation service at Loyola University Medical Center and assisting in teaching medical students and residents. Ultimately she hopes to split her time between ethics and teaching.

She attended medical school without any thoughts of pursuing legal education. During medical school she became increasingly interested in medical ethics and in the interaction between medicine, law, and medical ethics. This led her to seek further education in law. She uses her legal knowledge primarily in the clinical medical context and for research and writing. She does not currently practice law although she does some medical legal consulting. Dr. Egan is also involved on the defense side of a death penalty appeal in Illinois that she began work on when she was a law student
